Open Your Own (seo) Scrapbook Business

By Jake Saab

Imagine taking your love of scrapbooking to a whole new level by sharing it with others. You will be invited by friends, new and old, to come into their homes and show them how to create beautiful scrapbook pages filled with their photos and memories. Both beginner and experienced scrapbookers will love this time of fellowship with their new scrapping friends. You won’t be a sales person to them, but their personal scrapbook instructor, helping them preserve their family history for generations to come. If this sounds like what you’ve been looking for, keep reading!

Starting a home scrapbook business is a very important decision. Here are some basic things to consider. A home based scrapbook business is obviously one you run from your own home. In many cases, these types of businesses are done by direct sales or party plan scrapbook consultants.

Being a scrapbook consultant comes with its own challenges. Consider the following before jumping head first into a home scrapbook consultant business:

1. Do you like to teach others? If you are not good at showing others how to scrapbook, this business will be a challenge.

2. Are you willing to give up weeknights with your family to build a business? Most party plan scrapbook consultants host their shows on weeknights, with an occasional weekend crop or event. If your family time is at a minimum, being pulled away to do parties may strain your family more than you want.

3. Are you really passionate about scrapbooking? Your love for scrapbooking will rub off on the customers you come in contact with. If you don’t really love the craft, it will make your job much more difficult.

How you answer these 3 questions will guide you as to whether you are a good candidate for starting a home scrapbook business.

Now, if you’re ready to move forward and start a home scrapbook, there are several different companies to choose from. So how can you tell which one is best for you?

1. Do you like their products? If you don’t like the products the company offers to sell, it will be difficult or impossible to make any money selling them as a business.

2. Do they offer a competitive compensation and consultant discount plan? Each company’s approach to compensation and discounts is going to be a little different, so writing everything down to compare them as evenly as possible is a must! Keep in mind that some companies let you earn comissions on others you recruit, while others pay a one time bonus. Think about what you want out of the business. If you like leading others and want to build a team, look for one that is multi-level.

3. What are their consultant requirements? Some companies have very low requirements. I know of one that only requires one order per year! Others, like some of the more established scrapbook companies, require their scrapbook consultants to place several large orders per year. And there are many companies somewhere in between. Consider your financial situation and your drive to succeed and find a company that is the best fit.

These answers will help guide you to a company that may be a good one for you. Then, contact several scrapbook consultants. Ask them for a catalog, some consultant information and any product samples they might have. Someone who is serious about their business should be willing to send you a small sample of the products.

Also, be sure to ask them what they like and dislike about their company. Now, you might not get any negative answers, but it can’t hurt to ask.

Some people go straight to the top and call the company they’re interested in and ask to get in touch with their top consultants. Top consultants didn’t get to where they are by accident. These people will likely be the best people to learn the business under and might be more willing to provide any training you might need.

Once you do your research, you should be able to narrow it down to one or two companies. Personally, I would go for the one whose product you like most. After all, it is all about the products.

The best part about sharing your love of this art form is that customers will actually pay you to do this! Think of how much satisfaction you will receive by helping others doing something you already love.

The Work at Home Mom of the Future

By Jake Saab

The alarm sounds and rudely awakens me from a deep slumber. It is another early Monday morning which means it’s time to get up, get dressed and take my oldest daughter to school. I then head home, turn on my computer and get to work. Mornings for me are the most difficult as I struggle to balance spending time with my youngest daughter (not quite school age and still at home) and muddle my way through and respond to the endless emails in my inbox. Who am I? I am a WAHM.

WAHMs, or work-at-home moms make up many of the small online businesses we find among the plethora of Websites which exist on the Internet today. Why have so many of today’s moms taken the plunge into online business ownership? While every mom’s situation and circumstance is unique, most moms start on the path to home-based entrepreneurship for two main reasons: First, most moms want to be at home in order to take part in the primary parenting responsibilities. Also, many moms find it difficult to make ends meet on their spouse’s income alone. This forces many moms to make a decision as to whether or not go back to work or to find work out of the home. For many moms, the demands of the corporate world are overwhelming and too demanding, so they decide to start their own online business in hopes of controlling the work day in terms of flexibility and scheduling.

Why do so many moms choose the Internet as a venue to start a home business? There are a couple of reasons: The Internet (Websites) and email allow for ease of communication. For example, traditional businesses usually handle correspondence via telephone or in person. Can you imagine trying to conduct business over the phone while in the background your child screams for more ice cream? Or imagine as a mom business owner that you have an office and that a client comes in to see you for a meeting, but suddenly your child who is in your office as well, has a potty training accident. What mom could or would ever attempt to conduct business in this fashion? Thus, conducting business via an interactive website or through email allows a mom to accomplish those business tasks which would have otherwise been impossible in traditional settings.

The second reason is the cost involved when starting a business. Traditional methods require a business owner to obtain a commercial office, and of course there is the overhead which is associated with such an office. In comparison, it is relatively in-expensive to start an online business. Most Web authoring tools are cost effective and extremely easy to learn, making the cost of designing a business website almost obsolete. Also, the price of maintaining an online business presence through a Web host is a fraction of the cost of maintaining a commercial office. These are some of the contributing factors as to why more and more moms are turning to Web business ownership.

Today’s moms are able to make their dream of working at home a reality, but some overlook one important factor-balance. While it may seem that the WAHM has it all, a closer look might reveal otherwise. WAHMs struggle to maintain a healthy balance between work and life. As with most of life’s challenges, there are solutions that can help the work-at-home mom successfully manage work and family life, some of which include the following:

– Set boundaries. If possible, set limits on the amount of hours you will work each week.

– Set a schedule. In addition to setting boundaries, incorporate a daily schedule to follow so that you will not become over worked or “burned out.”

– Make time for your family. Remember that you started your online business with your family in mind and be sure to spend as much time with them as possible.

Although every WAHM’s situation and circumstance is unique, one common factor remains: To achieve the ideal work/family balance. Incorporating the techniques mentioned above, the WAHM will be able to focus and will gain the confidence she needs to run a successful Internet-based business and a happy home.

A Quick Guide to Barcode Equipment

By Frankie Zimmerman

A complete barcode system will consist of software, scanners, a printer or labeler and labels for thermo transfer or thermo direct printing. Also of interest are mobile terminals for mobile data acquisition with a built-in scanner or reader, a display and a keyboard. A POS (point of sale) solution will require laser barcode scanners with high throughput and automatic triggering for hands-free barcode scanning.

Barcode Software

Barcodes are created with special software. While barcode software for Microsoft Windows is available, best suited for barcode creation are Apple Macintosh computers. Macs are preferable due to their strong position in the DTP, prepress and graphics market segment. A typical barcode software will support the common symbologies, calculate checksums automatically and will provide a variety of output options with support for the most common images formats (like PNG, TIFF or JPG) and also for Post Script or EPS.

A cheap alternative to dedicated barcode generators are so called barcode fonts. However, the quality a barcode created with such a font will usually not conform to the respective standards.

Depending on the application the use of dedicated, barcode enabled, label printing software may be advised. For example, such software can be used to print sequential barcodes (for serial numbers) or print logos or product images next to the actual barcode.

Barcode Scanner

Barcode Scanners, also known as barcode readers exist in various forms: The most common type are laser scanners. Here a moving laser beam scans the code which results in fast and error free reading. A cheap alternative to laser scanners are CCD scanners that feature a row of light emitting diodes and photo detectors. The earliest type of barcode reader where so called barcode wands, also known a magic wands. Here a single light emitting diode (LED) and a single photo detector are used to detect the typical black and white pattern of a barcode. While laser and CCD barcode scanners scan a barcode as a whole the barcode wand has to be swiped across the code to read it.

Barcode Printers

Barcode printers are used to print the barcode on self adhesive labels. Today most barcode label printers work in either thermo direct or thermo transfer mode. Using the thermo direct principle the print head applies heat to selected parts of the label which then turn dark. This is the same principle as is used with older fax machines. Thermo direct labels are sensitive to light and should not be used if they have to last longer than a few days or weeks. Typical applications are address labels which only have to last a few days.

With thermo transfer printers a heat sensitive ribbon (thermo transfer ribbon) sits between the print head and the label. As heat is applied to the ribbon, ink transfers (hence the name) from the ribbon to the label. Labels that were printed with thermo transfer are very durable. However, besides the actual label the transfer ribbon is another consumable which will increase the printing cost.
